Pediatric cancer and long-term follow-up clinic
Wesley Children’s Hospital has board-certified pediatric hematologists/oncologists on-staff who specialize in the treatment of most pediatric cancers. We offer inpatient and outpatient pediatric oncology treatments. Pediatric patients may receive outpatient treatments through the pediatric sedation/infusion unit.
Pediatric chemotherapy and biotherapy require specific knowledge and specialized skills. Wesley Children’s Hospital participates in the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses program to train and educate our staff to administer pediatric chemotherapy.
Wesley Children’s Hospital also offers a long-term follow-up clinic to care for childhood cancer survivors from five years post-treatment and beyond. The long-term follow-up program will use roadmaps from the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and evidence-based medicine to provide required imaging, labs, psychosocial assessments and support. Physicians and staff will partner with a multidisciplinary team to accomplish patient and family goals, which also includes survivorship concerns and patient/family resources.
Cancer treatment options
We take a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, which involves radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, surgeons and other medical team members. Your cancer treatment plan at Wesley may include any of the following methods.
Radiation oncology
Radiation therapy refers to the use of radiation beams to destroy cancer cells and stop their growth. Our radiation oncologists in Wichita use the most advanced radiological and radioisotope technology to diagnose and treat cancer patients.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy involves one or more drugs designed to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells. Chemotherapy is most often administered intravenously or through a vein. Our oncology nurses receive training and certification from the Oncology Nursing Society, and we provide chemotherapy infusions seven days a week.
Surgery
Based on your diagnosis, surgery may be performed to biopsy masses or lymph nodes, to remove masses or for the placement of long-term catheters used to provide medication and/or treatments. For some cancers, a stem cell transplant or bone marrow transplant may be necessary.
Wesley offers robotic surgery to treat a variety of cancers. Robotic assisted surgery enables physicians to operate with much more precision than traditional surgical methods. Robotic surgery results in less blood loss and postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery. Our surgical oncology staff is trained and experienced in the care of cancer patients, including patients with complicated illnesses.
Genetic counseling
Wesley’s genetic counseling program is offered to individuals and families who may be at risk for cancer. Although most cancers occur by chance, cancer develops as the result of a genetic predisposition in some individuals.
Wesley’s board-certified oncology genetic counselor helps patients identify if they are at an increased risk for cancer. The counselor provides education and awareness of their cancer risk and offers risk-reducing strategies that may aid in cancer prevention.
Oncology nurse navigators
Wesley’s oncology navigators provide free assistance to cancer patients before, during and after hospitalization. Services also extend to referring physicians, ensuring effective communication among all caregivers, facilities and individuals.
A nurse navigator will expedite appointments, explain treatments and procedures and keep track of all the specialists involved in the cancer care treatment plan. Navigators will help patients navigate through imaging studies, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgery and other testing. The navigator works closely with every member of your healthcare team to keep the lines of communication open and be a consistent contact for each patient.
Cancer recovery support
Your Wesley healthcare team is with you throughout your journey to better health. We offer:
- Pain management options
- Pastoral care chaplains in-house 24 hours daily
- Advanced wound care for hard-to-heal wounds resulting from surgery or radiation
- Case managers who provide support, discharge planning and referrals to support groups and other services
