Types of blood cancer
Blood cancer refers to cancers that affect the blood cells, decreasing your body’s ability to fight infection. Wesley has the technology, expertise and staff to treat all three main types of blood cancer:
- Leukemia: This cancer occurs when normal white blood cells start to change and multiply uncontrollably.
- Lymphoma: This cancer occurs when cancer develops in the lymphatic system, the vessels that carry white blood cells from the body’s tissues to the blood.
- Multiple myelomas: This cancer occurs in blood plasma cells within the bone marrow.

Blood cancer treatment
Each patient’s blood cancer treatment will vary. Your treatment will depend on several factors, like your health, the speed in which the cancer is developing and the type of cancer you have. However, blood cancer treatment at Wesley may include any of the following treatments:
Chemotherapy
Radiation
Bone marrow transplant
This procedure replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy blood stem cells, which travel to the bone marrow to promote new, healthy bone marrow.
Stem cell transplant
This procedure involves infusing healthy, blood-forming cells into the body.
Blood cancer symptoms
Often, patients with slow-growing blood cancers will not experience symptoms of blood cancer. However, patients with an advanced form of the disease may experience:
- Frequent infections
- Fevers and/or chills
- Shortness of breath
- Loss of appetite and/or nausea
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Bone and/or joint pain
- Swollen lymph nodes
Pediatric hematology and oncology
Wesley Healthcare offers a pediatric oncology program supported by pediatric hematologists and oncologists and specialized medical staff. We treat most forms of pediatric blood cancers and provide a child-friendly environment designed for children and their families.
Our child life specialists work with pediatric patients and their families to help ease the child's fears and anxieties and to help the child cope with the hospital environment.
