Pediatric rehabilitation
After a serious injury or illness, children may need to regain strength and learn new ways of completing daily activities. They may benefit from physical therapy (for strength and mobility); occupational therapy (for relearning and adapting); and speech therapy (for language and communication).

Pediatric pet therapy
Provided by Wesley's child life specialists, pet therapy is an opportunity to provide normalization and socialization for pediatric patients and their families in the hospital. A group of volunteers visits the pediatric units with their canine and equestrian friends.
- Dog therapy is offered Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. in the pediatric unit. Dog therapy is certified through Therapy Dog International (TDI).
- Miniature horse therapy is offered every other Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the lobby of Wesley Children's Hospital.
Per our policy, therapy dogs must be TDI-certified and must go through our volunteer process at Wesley before they are able to visit our patients. This includes a background check and health screening. You too can become a volunteer.
Pediatric music therapy
Wesley's pediatric music therapy program uses evidence-based musical interventions to help accomplish individual patient goals. The program is provided at no cost to families through a partnership with a board-certified music therapist.
A hospitalization can cause stress and anxiety for patients and families. It also provides a limited control of a child's environment, in which surroundings can sometimes be intimidating and scary. Music therapy services help a child cope with the hospital environment by expressing emotions in an engaging, non-threatening way and giving back some control over their treatment.
Music therapy can be used when:
- A patient is experiencing anxiety or not coping well with hospitalization or a diagnosis
- A patient is experiencing emotional trauma
- A patient is enduring excessive pain and needs alternative management
- A patient has a negative prognosis and is near end-of-life
- Patients and families are experiencing grief
- Patients are in need of appropriate developmental stimulation
- Patients need an appropriate emotional outlet
- To ease pain and anxiety during procedures
- Patients have a limited support system
Music therapy can:
- Assist in pain management
- Elevate mood and counteract depression
- Promote physical movement
- Provide support and distraction during medical procedures
- Help calm and promote sleep
- Counteract fear and anxiety
- Decrease muscle tension and encourage relaxation
- Build emotional intimacy between family members
Music therapy takes place in Wesley Children's Hospital and is sponsored by Wesley Children's Foundation. For more information about Wesley's music therapy program, please call (316) 962-8369 or email Wesley's music therapy program.
